World-building is detailed, with stories set in multiple cultures. Quifan’s futuristic chase scenes are immediate, urgent, and just so cool. In many ways, AI 2041 is an excellent work of fiction.
Instead, I responded emotionally to the stories. However, just as a brake caliper expert might be as amazed as anybody by the entirety of an automobile, I found my personal expertise didn’t inform my reaction to the book much. So, I experienced the stories alongside people working in AI-related fields (personally, I’m a data scientist). I read AI 2041 as part of a group - the Women in Data book club, specifically. Each of Quifan’s stories is followed up by an analysis (sort of a mini-lecture) by Lee. He partners with internationally prominent sci-fi writer Chen Qiufan to illustrate technology trends the authors believe have “a greater than 80% likelihood of coming to pass” by 2041.

Spanning five continents and numerous topics in science and technology, the book imagines various futures made possible or influenced by advances in artificial intelligence (AI). AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future is a hybrid fiction-nonfiction book, consisting of 313 pages of short stories with 152 pages of explanatory material.
